Jim Burgess has more than 33 years of experience as a trial lawyer, strategic advisor, decision maker, and mediator in a broad range of industries, including healthcare, entertainment, insurance, manufacturing, distribution, retail, real estate and others. Jim graduated from Claremont McKenna College in 1984 with a BA in Philosophy and Political Science. He graduated Order of the Coif from USC Gould School of Law in 1990. Jim has received mediation training from the LA Superior Court (2008), the Straus Institute of Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine Law School, Mediating The Litigated Case (2014), Harvard Law School's Negotiation Master Class (2023), and has received Advanced Mediation Training from the US District Court for the Central District of California (2022-23). He will receive Arbitration Training in November 2023 from the American Arbitration Association. Jim will be teaching a class on Remedies at Loyola Law School as an Adjunct Professor in the Spring of 2024.
Jim is licensed to practice law in both California and Washington, D.C., and in all US District Courts and Courts of Appeal in those jurisdictions, including the US Supreme Court.
Jim is involved in the community, has received numerous awards for community and pro bono service, and is the former President (2018-20) and Board Member (2014-22) of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. He is AV Rated by Martindale-Hubbell and is a Southern California Super Lawyer (2011-2024). Jim was a member of the Board of Marymount High School, Los Angeles from 2013-2020, and is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the Gould Center for Humanistic Studies at Claremont McKenna College.
Jim is married to Elizabeth Casey Burgess. They have four grown daughters. He loves to read about US Military and Presidential History, enjoys watching USC Football and Angels Baseball, and likes action and sci-fi movies, and will watch Hallmark movies with his wife and daughters.
